Umu April 10, 2023
Unfortunately I don't have my journal with me. Right now we are at the chapel playing some basketball. And all the days and weeks have started to meld into one. Because of that, I'll share a quick synopsis with you about this week.
Monday I found a violin at one of the second-hand shops. It had no bow or bridge but it did have 4 strings so I think that it was worth it. Now I just need to find a second hand violin that has a bow and a bridge.
Tuesday we had district council as per usual. After that we did some biking and we went down to a place where I hadn't been yet. Our appointment that we had for the day fell through so we rode down to a big pond and did some personal study on a bench. We then rod our bikes to a member's house and we found out that one of them was having surgery the next day and that she wanted a blessing. Then we went back to our flat for Fafaga.
Wednesday was a hard day. First, we had to get our car serviced, and the service station is out of our area. The best thing that happened that day was that I found a cool as bible written in the original old English at the local library. Because of the car service we couldn't do much that day and the two appointments that we did have fell through.
Thursday we did a special finding activity for Easter and we found one person on the bus who might be interested in learning more about the gosple.
Friday we had exchanges again, and once again I was with the Samoan speaking elders. I remembered how to introduce myself this time, and I said a prayer in (probably very broken) Samoan.
To introduce yourself you need to say
'O lou igoa 'O __your name__.
Saturday we had interviews with President Thomas which took up most of the day but we got things for what is called an Umu and that happened today on Monday.
An Umu is a traditional Samoan cooking style but now it's usually used for special occasions (in this case, Easter) where you build a fire with rocks and use the hot rocks like an oven to cook the food. We had chicken, lamb and taro (normal food)
We also had the traditional Samoan food which includes
horse, mackerel mixed with coconut milk, and a whole pig head. And everything was delicious.
